BEAUHARNAIS Eugene de - Printed Document 1806 as Viceroy of Italy
Eugène de BEAUHARNAIS (1781-1824)Printed Document in his name, indicating where the Justices of the Peace will be based for the year 1808, and giving the names of the relevant police commissioners.
1 page large folio in Italian, headed by the imperial eagle, Milan, 21 January 1808.
Napoleon’s titles are given in bold lettering at the top [trans:] “By the grace of God and by the Constitution, Emperor of the French, King of Italy and Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine”, followed, in rather less emphatic type by Eugène’s titles as “Eugene Napoleon of France, Viceroy of Italy, Prince of Venice, Arch-chancellor of the French Empire”.
According to the document, the Justices of the Peace are to be based in Verona, Venice, Padua, Brescia, Milan and Bologna.
Napoleon’s stepson, Eugène was legally adopted by Napoleon in 1806, six months after his appointment as Viceroy of Italy. He was not only a very able general, but one who was held in both esteem and affection by his men.
The document has been very slightly, but neatly, trimmed at the left margin, and has an old rusty paperclip mark at the top, but it is otherwise in very good condition, and a very attractive piece from the period.
