ASQUITH H H - Letter Signed to the editor of The Daily News 1910
Herbert Henry ASQUITH (1852-1928)
Typed Letter Signed (“H.H. Asquith”) to A.G. Gardiner, editor of The Daily News, indicating his pleasure at the “excellent reports of the progress of the Gladstone League”.
1 page 4to with integral blank leaf, 10 Downing Street, March 1910.
“I am glad to hear such excellent reports of the progress of the Gladstone League . . . I would lay especial stress on the importance of strenuous and concerted action designed to secure for the voter the absolute and unfettered right to give his vote in accordance with his own choice.”
The Gladstone League was founded early in 1910, partly as a campaigning body for free trade and land reform, but primarily to combat voter intimidation, particularly in rural areas where this still proved all too common among village tenants.
The recipient of this letter, A.G. Gardiner, editor of The Daily News, was a prominent supporter of Liberal causes, and had been instrumental in the creation of the Gladstone League.
The letter is slightly browned and crumpled at the right hand edge, and there is a small rusty paper clip mark at the top left, but it is otherwise in good condition.
