CRABBE George - Autograph Letter Signed 1825 returning to Aldborough

  • £395.00

George CRABBE (1754-1832)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Geo Crabbe”) to his niece Cecilia, telling her of his travel plans for his return to Aldborough.
1 page 4to, Hampstead, 18 October 1825.
An affectionate family letter.
I should have thanked you for your kind letter some Days since, had I been certain of the Day of my Journey, but Circumstances have made that so doubtful that I would not write till I had made up my Mind or rather till my Friends had allowed me to travel & had considered me as one freed from the Care of the Doctor & the Nurse, for both of whom I have had much Occasion. A Gentleman who is going to Chelmsford is gone to Town this morning & means to take for us Places in some Suffolk-Coach One that goes to Ipswich I prefer for then I am within two Stages of you & may hope to reach Aldborough in the morning of Thursday, that is by one or two O’Clock; two at farthest, so that if I be not at yur House by that Time do not expect me for that Day, & indeed I may say further that in all probability I shall be able to finish my Journey by twelve o’Clock, tho’ I dare not precisely fix on that Hour. & this is the best View which I can at this Time take of my purposes they do not depend upon myself.
I am sorry to learn that my Sister is so much indisposed: I would think the best & try to do so. It is some Consolation that she is under the care of Mr. King of whom I have heard so much from persons who are likely to be Judges. Give my love & tell her how soon I hope to see her: Love to Emma for I think she is at Home.
Pray my dear Niece remember me very kindly to Mr. Sparkes & thank him for his frank & obliging Invitation which I accept with much Satisfaction. Indeed I want to see you all, not forgetting Aldborough itself.
Crabbe had evidently been staying with his friend, Samuel Hoare Jr. in Hampstead before travelling back to his birthplace, Aldborough [Aldeburgh], to visit his family. By this late stage of his life, Crabbe’s poetry was widely admired by his contemporaries in the literary world. Today, he is perhaps best known for The Borough, part of which inspired Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes.
The page has been very slightly torn at the top, just above the start of the letter, possibly when removed from an album, but it is otherwise in good, clear condition.
