EDWARD Duke of Kent - Letter Signed 1814 from Queen Victoria's father
EDWARD, Duke of Kent (1767-1820)Letter Signed (“Edward”) to Major General Torrens, pleading the cause of a young Lieutenant of the Royal Scots.
2 pages 8vo with integral blank leaf, on which a draft reply has been written, Kensington Palace, 24 September 1814.
“I herewith enclose a letter I received two days since from Lieut. William Gordon, of the Royal Scots, at present a Captain in the 24th Portuguese Regiment and feel anxious earnestly to recommend his cause to your good offices, as he is a remarkable fine young Man, and I conceive justly entitled to the step of advancement, in the British service, which he solicits, (no doubt, with the expectation of that being followed, by his promotion to a Majority in the Portuguese); if therefore, in your power to assist him, as he is unusually promising, I own I shall be particularly gratified by it, as I feel a warm interest in his getting forward in his profession. . .”
On the verso of the blank leaf, a draft reply indicates that Major General Torrens must “repeat . . . the extreme difficulty of finding the means of promotion under the circumstances . . . ”
Edward, Duke of Kent, third son of George III and father of Queen Victoria, was known as a strict disciplinarian in the army, so it is interesting to find him here pleading the cause of a young officer. He served as honorary Colonel of the Royal Scots from 1801 until his death nineteen years later.
