DELAUNAY Sonia - Typed Letter Signed 1965 to Caroline Delteil regarding Brancusi's signature

  • £345.00

Sonia DELAUNAY (1885-1979)

Typed Letter Signed (“Sonia”) with an autograph postscript, to Caroline Delteil, replying to a query about Brancusi’s signature.
1 page large 8vo in French, Paris, 29 November 1965, together with an envelope with notes in another hand [possibly that of Caroline Delteil] .
Trans: “I hope that your cold is better and that we will see you here one of these days, although the weather is atrocious.
As to Brancusi’s first name, I have always heard that he was called Constantin and never anything else. I don’t understand the L B of your signature and I will try to ask the Romanian doctor who treated him to see if he can tell me anything.
When do you think you will be able to come for sure? We are so busy that all these moves are, after all, a waste of time, and if this has to go on I will not be able to keep them all the time. It is mainly because of the Pascin and the Calder, as the small one could have gone into my box at the bank.”
In an autograph postscript, she adds “I will write to Joseph one of these days, in the meantime I kiss you both.”
A note at the top, possibly in the hand of Caroline Delteil says that “Sonia knew a lady who also had the “L.B.” signature.”
The Ukrainian-born artist Sonia Delaunay and American-born Caroline Delteil, wife of the French poet Joseph Delteil had been at the centre of the exciting and innovative artistic life of Paris between the wars.
Delaunay, who together with her husband Robert developed a vibrant, colourful branch of cubism known as orphism, was known for an immense range of design, from painting to fabric design, set design, costumes, furniture and books. For a charity gala in the 1920s, she designed costumes which illustrated a reading of a poem by Joseph Delteil.
She remained on friendly terms with the poet, and with his wife, Caroline. Prior to her marriage with Delteil, Caroline had herself achieved a measure of fame in 1920s Paris when she travelled back to her native America in search of talent for a new jazz revue which became known by the now-dubious name of the Revue Nègre. The revue, which introduced the then-unknown Josephine Baker to Paris was a sensation and Baker an overnight star.
