JOURDAN Jean Baptiste - Letter Signed 1809 regarding an English prisoner in Spain

  • £495.00

Jean Baptiste JOURDAN (1762-1833)

Letter Signed (“Jourdan”) to His Excellency the Comte d’Hunebourg [Minister of War Henri Clarke] regarding Mr. Collins, an English prisoner.

1 page folio in French on blue-grey paper, Madrid, 19 August 1809.

Trans: “The King [Joseph Bonaparte] has ordered me to have the honour to send to Y[our] E[xcellency] a letter from Marshal the Duc de Trévise [Mortier] regarding a Mr. Collins, quarter master of the 88th English regiment who asks to be considered as a non-combatant and to be sent back to his regiment. H.M. having not considered it necessary to pronounce on this request, asks Y.E. to decide on this question, or to present it to S.M. I & R. [His Imperial and Royal Majesty, i.e., Napoleon]."

It has not been possible to ascertain the fate of Mr. Collins, nor precisely when or where he was captured.

Jourdan, the victor of Fleurus, one of the most important victories of the French Revolutionary Wars, never again equalled that success. When Joseph Bonaparte departed Naples to become King of Spain, Jourdan followed him there, where he served as the King’s chief of staff.
