MONCK George, Duke of Albemarle - Letter Signed 1663 to Sir William Compton ordering barrells of powder

  • £395.00

George Monck, Duke of ALBEMARLE (1608-1670)

Letter Signed (“Albemarle”) as Lieutenant General of the Forces, to Sir William Compton, Master of the Ordnance, requiring him to deliver to Quartermaster Richard Collins “tenn Barrells of powder with a Double proportion of match for the use of my Regim[en]t of of his Ma[jes]t[ie]s Foote Guards.”

Half page folio with integral leaf on which has been written “Sr, These being joint”, indicating that an enclosure was once present. 20 May 1663.

Monck served with equal distinction as general and admiral. Distressed by the ineptitude of the government of Richard Cromwell, he used the immense prestige gained from his victories against the Dutch to influence the army and public opinion in favour of the restoration of the monarchy. Charles II rewarded him with a dukedom, a large pension, and the appointment of Lieutenant General of the Forces.

Sir William Compton, to whom the letter is addressed, was one of the members of the Sealed Knot, a group of six men who conspired in a series of Royalist plots and uprisings during the Commonwealth. His reputation was such that Cromwell referred to him as “the sober young man, and the godly cavalier”.

Together with an engraving of Albemarle in three-quarter-length pose, by C. Bestland after a painting by Michael Wright “now in Powderham Castle in the County of Devon”. Small piece of paper torn away at blank right margin, not touching the image. c. 26 x 20 cms.
