St. Petersburg, 31 January 1805.
Alexander I’s relationship with Napoleonic France was particularly changeable. In 1805, the year of this document, he joined forces with Britain and the Holy Roman Empire in resisting French ambitions. By December, Russian and Austrian armies were defeated in what was often held to be Napoleon’s greatest victory at Austerlitz. Eighteen months later, Alexander signed the Treaty of Tilsit, sealing an alliance with France, telling Napoleon that he shared the French Emperor’s hatred of the English. The debacle of France’s attempted invasion of Russia marked a sad turning point for Napoleon’s fortunes, and Alexander eventually rode in triumph through the streets of Paris in 1814 as Napoleon signed his first abdication.
The document is in very good condition, with a few remnants of Alexander’s red wax seal at the bottom left of the document.
