BALLETS RUSSES
Comœdia Illustré magazine, including a 16-page central section on the 7th season of the Ballets Russes in Paris featuring six full-page colour illustrations of set and costume sketches by Léon Bakst and numerous monochrome photographs of dancers, Tamara Karsavina, Bronislava Nijinska, Vaslav Nijinsky, etc.60 pages plus 4 pages covers, Paris 1 June 1912.
The Ballets Russes section offers extensive illustrations and photographs from the spectacularly exotic Le Dieu Bleu, choreographed by Michel Fokine, as well as his Thamar both of which had their premiere in May of this year. There are two sketches, one of costume and one of decor, for Fokine’s Daphnis and Chloë which received its premiere in Paris on 8 June 1912. Nijinsky’s scandalous Après-Midi d’un Faune, first performed on 29 May is featured in only one costume sketch by Bakst.
The bi-monthly magazine Comœdia Illustré appeared from 1908 to 1936, with extensive coverage of the theatrical, musical and artistic matters. This being Paris, the magazine also gives extensive coverage to the work of French couturiers, with 16 pages at the end devoted to photographs of stars of the opera and vaudeville stages modelling the latest creations.
The covers have very minor wear, but the body of the magazine is in very good condition.
