CAMPBELL ROY - Typed Letter Signed 1948 regarding Conan Doyle stories
Roy CAMPBELL (1901-1957)
Typed Letter Signed (“Roy Campbell”) to “Dear Wyndham Goldie” (the actor Frank Wyndham Goldie), arranging for a reading for radio broadcast, with an autograph postscript remarking that “we have the greatest difficulty with Conan Doyle stories because of some copyright complications. . .”
1 page small 8vo on British Broadcasting Corporation letterhead, London, 30 August 1948.
“. . . I am trying to arrange the copyright of “The Stolen Bacillus” [a short story by H.G. Wells]; pending a final answer about it, could you read it on October 19th? (Rehearsals 10.00 a.m., transmission 11.00 – 11.15 a.m. in the Light Programme. . . I am returning the Conan Doyle book herewith: thank you for letting me see it.”
In an autograph postscript, Campbell remarks on the copyright complications with Conan Doyle, continuing “I would be glad of other suggestions.”
Campbell’s poetry, praised at the time by T.S. Eliot and many others, has been rather lost from view in the decades following his death. After the war, he worked for many years at the BBC.
The actor Frank Wyndham Goldie was married to the BBC current affairs producer Grace Wyndham Goldie, one of the few women to reach a senior position in the Corporation at the time.
The letter is slightly browned and frayed at the top, not touching the text.
