CORELLI Marie - Autograph Letter Signed 1902 describing Edward VIIs coronation
Marie CORELLI (1855-1924)
Autograph Letter Signed ("Marie Corelli") to "Dear Mrs. Sanders"(?) giving her impressions of the Coronation of Edward VII which she had attended three days earlier.
4 pages 8vo, Mason Croft, Stratford on Avon, 12 August 1902.
"I have been hoping I could manage to accept your kind invitation for tomorrow - but we leave here for Scotland early on Thursday morning, and as I have to judge the 'Window Box Competition' tomorrow, I fear we shall have no time even to look in at the Manor.
The ceremony at the Abbey was truly magnificent. The King's guests, among whom I was were most luxuriously seated - so I saw everything very beautifully, and enjoyed myself greatly at the Peers luncheon afterwards in the House of Lords. I would not have missed such a splendid scene for worlds - and the King looked grand when the Crown was set upon his head and he faced the people. The "God Save the King!" in the Abbey was quite electrifying! . . ."
By the turn of the century, Marie Corelli was an astonishingly popular novelist, achieving best-seller status with novels of a rather baroque, semi-mystical nature. Eccentric, anti-feminist, anti-suffragette and highly emotional, neither her reputation nor her works survived the change in fashion after the First World War.
The coronation of Edward VII had been postponed for six weeks while the King recovered from an emergency operation for appendicitis. It is interesting to discover that a popular novelist, with no 'highbrow' distinction, such as Corelli, was among those invited.
There are remains of glue at the edge of the letter from a previous mount, not affecting the text.
