CROMPTON Richmal - Autograph Letter Signed 1958 about a mistake in a book
Richmal CROMPTON (1890-1969)
Autograph Letter Signed (“Richmal C. Lamburn”) to “Dear Miss Tomlinson” discussing a problem numbering houses in one of her books.
2 pages 8vo, Chislehurst, 8 May 1958.
“. . . I am so much looking forward to seeing you on Monday – unless, of course, the train strike starts then, but let’s hope it won’t”
I agree with all your suggestions, except, perhaps, the one about Gillian and the play.
Yes, the number of the houses got completely out of control! I numbered them, at first, 1, 3, 5, then, at the last minute, realised that, as they faced the sea, they would have consecutive numbers & went through the MS to alter tem to 1, 2, 3, but must have missed as many as I altered! . . .”
Richmal Crompton’s Just William stories were among the most popular of children’s novels in the first half of the twentieth century. The dreadful Violet Elisabeth, forever threatening to “thcream and thcream until I’m thick” remains one the great comic figures of children’s literature. Many readers assumed that Richmal Crompton was a man, and the rather retiring author did not try to disabuse them. She signs here with her full name, although she dropped the ‘Lamburn’ when writing. The letter has a small stain, possibly coffee, at the bottom right corner, affecting one word.
