HARDY Thomas Masterman - Autograph Letter Signed 1836 recommending the son of Nelson's secretary
Thomas Masterman HARDY (1769-1839)Autograph Letter Signed (“T.M. Hardy”) to “My Dear Locker” [Edward Hawke Locker, secretary to the Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich], regarding John Scott.
2 pages 8vo with integral blank leaf, n.p., 8 May 1836.
“I have no doubt but Mr. John Scott is the son of the late Secretary to Lord Nelson, but he has never made application to me for pecuniary aid altho’ he has frequently applied to me to get him a situation in some public office. He was discharged from Somerset House as one of the Clerks, when the Reduction took place. His elder Brother is now a Clerk in the India House. I believe Mr. John Scott to be a very good and deserving young man.”
From the remark about “pecuniary aid”, it seems possible that the letter may refer to a request for assistance, although it might concern a position at the Royal Hospital, Greenwich. Hardy had been appointed Governor of the Hospital in 1834; Locker served as secretary to the Royal Hospital from 1819. Locker’s father, William Locker, under whom Nelson served as second lieutenant at the age of 18, had been a previous Governor of the Hospital before his death in 1800.
The elder John Scott, father of the subject of this letter, would have been well known to Hardy when both men served under Nelson on the Victory. Scott, Nelson’s trusted secretary, was standing near Nelson at Trafalgar when Scott was killed by a cannon ball in the opening moments of the battle. Nelson was standing at almost the same spot when he was later killed.
Remains of mount to verso of the blank leaf.
