LANNES Jean, duc de Montebello - Letter Signed 1801 ordering a Lieutenant to report to Paris
Jean LANNES, duc de Montebello (1769-1809)
Letter Signed (“Lannes”) as Division General and Commander in Chief to the Minister of War [Berthier].
1 page 4to in French, Paris, 26 Messidor an 9 [15 July 1801].
Trans: “I beg you, Citizen Minister, to give to Citizen Bureaux de Puzy, Lieutenant in the 18th Regiment of Cavalry, the order to report to Paris. This officer, who is to be employed in accordance with his rank in the Guards Light Cavalry, is an instructor at the Riding School at Versailles.”
It has not been possible to definitively identify the Citizen Bureaux de Puzy mentioned in this letter, but it seems likely that he was related to Jean-Xavier Bureaux de Pusy, a friend of Lafayette, known for his organization of the French provinces into the départements we know today. A Colonel Bureaux de Pusy fought with the 12th Dragoons at Waterloo.
Lannes, an exceptional commander, was famous not only for his courage but also for his temper. A staunch believer in the revolutionary ideals, he was the only one of the marshals who was allowed (or allowed himself) to use the familiar “tu” when speaking to Napoleon. Mortally wounded at the battle of Essling in 1809, he was the first of Napoleon’s marshals to die and his letters are consequently relatively rare.
A most attractive letter, in very good condition.
