David LLOYD GEORGE (1863-1945)

Typed Letter Signed (“D Lloyd George”) to Lord Beaverbrook, reluctantly accepting his resignation [from his post as Minister of Information].

1 page 4to with integral blank leaf, 10 Downing Street, 23 October 1918.

A letter written by the Prime Minister less than three weeks before the end of the First World War.

It is with the most sincere regret that I have read your letter. My first inclination was to ask you to continue . . . in the expectation that after your operation you would be able to resume your duties; but . . . I cannot take the responsibility of urging this upon you. I must therefore reluctantly accept your resignation.

I hope and believe that when you are relieved from the inevitable worries and anxieties of your office you will quickly recover and that some opportunity may then be found which will enable your great energy and ability to be again used in the service of the State.”

In February 1918 Lloyd George appointed the press magnate Lord Beaverbrook as the first ever Minister of Information. Beaverbrook was able to use his considerable understanding of the workings of propaganda to further the wartime effort. However, this was not achieved without a great deal of opposition from other ministers and politicians who at the time resented this manipulation. By October, the Ministry of Information was very unpopular indeed and when Beaverbrook resigned, Westminster gossip had it that his ill health was only a convenient excuse. In fact, this was not the case at all and Beaverbrook was genuinely seriously ill. After his convalescence and the end of the war, Beaverbrook turned his attention back to his newspaper, the Daily Express, which vigorously back Lloyd George in his successful re-election campaign in December 1918.

There are two filing holes at the left margin of the letter, not affecting the text.
