LOUISE of Prussia Princess - Letter Signed 1807 regarding a pension granted by her uncle Frederick the Great

  • £250.00

Princess LOUISE of Prussia (1728-1820)

Letter Signed (“Louise pr. Ferdinand de pr.”) to the Imperial Commissioner Bignou [Bignon?], regarding payment of the pension granted to her by Frederick II.
1 page 4to in French with integral blank leaf, Berlin, 1 October 1807.
Trans: “You were kind enough to have paid to me the month of September, as passed by the Caisse [treasury?] of the Chamber of the Marche-Electorale, which was due to me for one month, as per a legacy which Frederick II left me in his will; you will be good enough to let me know the Caisse to which I should send my receipt in order to receive this; and also as I have received the preceding months. 33 Ecus 8 gr. from a pension, which was granted me by the king Frederick II but which I did not receive in September, you will be good enough to give the order, that I also receive for the months of September and October 66 Ecus 8 gr.
You will forgive the importunity which I cause you, and accept the renewed assurances of my esteem
The very affectionate friend
Princess Louise was from an extremely interesting family. Her uncle was Frederick the Great (who had granted her the pension in question here), her maternal grandfather was George I of Great Britain, and her son, Prince Louis Ferdinand, was killed in battle against Napoleon’s army in 1806. Prince Louis Ferdinand had been a leading advocate of the resumption of the war against Napoleon, but he did not live to see its outcome a year later at Tilsit, a catastrophic outcome for Prussia.
Princess Louise herself, considered a beauty in her youth, was said by many to be exceptionally haughty and excessively formal later in life. The tone of old-fashioned formality seems to be evident in this letter.
