MONTGOMERY Bernard Law - Autograph Letter Signed three months after the German surrender

  • £675.00

Bernard Law MONTGOMERY, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976)

Autograph Letter Signed (“B.L. Montgomery”) to “My dear Kirkie” [General Sir Sidney Kirkman], making arrangements for “the talks at Larkhill” and continuing with instructions regarding working with Boy Scouts in order to “get to work on the youth of the German nation”.

2 pages small 4to, Tac Headquarters, 21, Army Group, 5 August 1945.

Writing just three months after accepting the German surrender at Lüneburg Heath, Montgomery’s letter to Kirkman is, as always, a model of clear thinking.

Of course Rawlins must attend the talks at Larkhill [home of the Royal School of Artillery on Salisbury Plain]. I will cancel my visit to 49 DIV on 18th August. I cannot manage 20th as I shall be in Berlin on that date; nor do I want to change my visit to 3 Canadian DIV on 22nd. But I could visit 48 DIV on 23rd Aug. Will this suit?

Re: Boy Scouts

This will take time. At present we do not want too much publicity. The real 100% Boy Scout organisation had better be handled by me through the Control Commission and via the Boy Scout H.Q. in London. This I will do and Corps Districts can lay off that matter.

Meanwhile, you can start cross-country running clubs, football clubs, pigeon clubs, etc, etc, and generally get to work on the youth of the German nation; do this from the bottom: by local enthusiasts getting hold of a German in his kreis and starting youth organisations.

Is above clear?”

In his Memoirs, Montgomery outlines the plan for the “rehabilitation of the German mentality” in three points, namely, to allow people to discuss their problems, to eradicate “idleness, boredom and fear of the future” and finally to “work particularly on the youth of the German nation”. All of these points appear to have been in his mind in his suggestions for the youth of the nation, which seem to have a great deal in common with the ethos of British public schools, or that of mens sana in corpore sano.

Montgomery’s correspondent, General Sir Sidney Kirkman, had been a valued colleague of his throughout the war, and Montgomery had specifically asked Kirkman to join him when he took command of the 8th Army. At the end of the war, Kirkman served on the Army Council.

There is a small filing hole at the top left of the letter, as Kirkman appears to have kept all Montgomery’s letters neatly in a file. One word on the second page of the letter is slightly affected by this.
