MORTIER Edouard - Letter Signed 1802 regarding a soldier acquitted of a desertion charge

  • £415.00

Edouard MORTIER, duc de Trévise (1768-1835)

Letter Signed (“Ed: Mortier”) to the Minister of War [Berthier], informing him that one Kramer, about whom Berthier had enquired, has been released upon his acquittal of the charge of desertion.
1 page folio in French, with a vignette with the arms of the French Republic, Paris, 30 nivose an 10 [20 January 1802].
Trans: “The man named Kramer about whom you wrote to me on the 23rd of this month is no longer at the Abbey. He was brought to that prison on the 3rd nivose inst following the ordnance against him by the president of the second council of war of this Division, to be brought to judgement in absentia.
On the 15th of the same month, Kramer having been acquitted of the charge of desertion of which he had been accused, I sent him back to his corps, the 3rd regiment of hussars.”
Mortier distinguished himself during the French Revolutionary Wars, serving at Jemmapes, Neerwinden, Fleurus and the siege of Maastricht. When the peace of Amiens collapsed at the end of 1802, Napoleon despatched Mortier a few months later to capture the Electorate of Hanover from the British, a task he accomplished with some speed.
Out of favour in the aftermath of the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy, Mortier’s status as a peer of France were reinstated in 1819. He was in the entourage of King Louis Phillipe in July 1835 when an attempt was made on the king’s life; Louis Phillippe emerged with little worse than a scratch, but Mortier was among those killed.
An early mark in red indelible pencil at the top reads “Police”, but the letter is otherwise in very good, clear condition.
