NAPOLEON I - Letter Signed 1811 regarding the Portuguese Legion
NAPOLEON I (1769-1821)Annotation Signed (“Np”) on a Letter Signed (“Duc de Feltre”) from the Minister of War, granting a request by General Carcome, commanding the Portuguese Legion that Lieutenant Ducouret be allowed to serve as his aide de camp.
1 page folio in French on letterhead of the Ministry of War, Paris, 25 March 1811.
In his letter of the 20th March, Clarke passed on the request:
Trans: “The Division General Carcome, commanding the Portuguese legion, has requested the favour to have, exceptionally, under his orders as aide de camp Ducouret, sub-Lieutenant in the Portuguese legion. This officer has the advantage of speaking Portuguese.
I have the honour of receiving your Majesty’s orders regarding this request. . .”
General Carcome was in fact Portuguese. Already an experienced soldier when the French invaded Spain, Carcome soon joined the Portuguese legion when it was formed by order of Napoleon in 1808.
Carcome’s desire to have a Portuguese speaker as his aide de camp may have stemmed from a desire to help with communications with his subordinates, as the legion was not, at the time, in the Peninsula. The legion participated in campaigns in Germany, Austria, and later in Russia. Carcome himself had been wounded at Wagram the previous year, and later fought at Borodino. He survived to return to Portugal after Napoleon’s first abdication.
An interesting document, about a seldom discussed part of the imperial army.
