PARRY William Edward - Autograph Letter 1826 from the Arctic explorer
William Edward PARRY (1790-1855)
Autograph Letter in the third person, apologizing that he has been unable to call on Mr. Scobell as he has been detained by work at the Admiralty.
1 page 8vo with integral blank leaf, Admiralty, 7 April 1826.
“Captain Parry presents his Comp[limen]ts to Mr. & Mrs. Scobell, and will do himself the honor of waiting upon them at dinner on Weds. The 19th Inst. Captn. P. begs to apologize for not having called on Mr. Scobell, but has been prevented solely by the necessity of his being at the Admiralty daily from ten till four o’clock.”
Having already led a number of expeditions in northern waters, in April 1826 Parry put forward a proposal for reaching the North Pole from Spitsbergen. He sailed a year later, and although he failed to reach the Pole, he did succeed in travelling further north than any other explorer before him, a record which remained unbroken for fifty years.
Tears at the fold have been repaired. The letter is rather dusty and slightly crumpled but in clear and legible condition.
