RAVEL Maurice - Autograph Letter Signed 1923 to a pioneer of acupuncture inviting him to visit

  • £1,100.00

Maurice RAVEL (1875-1937)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Maurice Ravel”) to “Cher ami”, identified on the address leaf as Georges Soulié de Morand, inviting him to visit, assuring him that he would be at home as he had been operated on and unable to move.
1 page 8vo in French on a “petit bleu”, Paris, 5 July 1923.
Trans: “If you are at Neuilly, and you have a moment, I would be happy to see you. I was operated on Tuesday and I will be immobile until Saturday at least. You are therefore certain to find me [here] all day.
My respectful homages to Madame Soulié de Morand and friendly greetings to you.
Ravel had obviously been suffering a great deal from a problem which, though far from life threatening, nevertheless limited his activity. He had been unable to attend the premiere of Stravinsky’s Les Noces on the 13th of June, but did manage to attend a later performance on the 21st, having had an injection of cocaine into his foot. Ravel wrote to Stravinsky congratulating him on the work, but he could not refrain from telling him that the outing had done further damage to his foot. The problem was a soft corn, which he had removed, spending the following days in a hotel in Neuilly.
Ravel’s correspondent, Georges Soulié de Morant, was a diplomat and sinologist who, from the late 1920s, turned his attention to the practice of acupuncture which he had encountered whilst serving in China. By 1935, he was sufficiently experienced to be recognized as an acupuncturist and opened a practice in Neuilly. Soulié de Morant introduced acupuncture to France and indeed to the West, treating a distinguished list of patients, including Ravel, Colette and Cocteau.
