SHREWSBURY Duke of - Letter Signed 1699 to Dr Charles Trimnell the King's Chaplain

  • £310.00

Charles Talbot, Duke of SHREWSBURY (1660-1718)

Letter Signed ("Shrewsbury") to the Reverend Dr. Charles Trimnell, newly appointed King's Chaplain, informing him that he was to take the month of February as his "Month of Waiting".

1 page folio with integral address leaf, Whitehall, 9 December 1699.

"Having thought fit to appoint you one of his Majesty's Chaplains in ordinary, in ye room of Doct[o]r Talbot, who is promoted to ye Bishoprick of Oxford, These are to give you Notice that you are to take ye Month of February for your Month of Waiting; and every Year upon ye first day whereof, to attend at Court, prepar'd to Preach & officiate as often as it shall come to your Turn, hoping therefore you will not fail therein, I remain . . ."

Charles Talbot was among those who had done most to further the deposition of James II and the cause the William III.  Although he was later known to have corresponded with the exiled Stuart, he remained in favour with William III, was created Duke of Shrewsbury in 1694, and only left the government due to failing health.

The Reverend Doctor Trimnell had been chaplain at Althorp, and was eventually to be appointed Bishop of Norwich, and later Bishop of Winchester.

A previous collector has made a few unobtrusive penciled notes, the letter has suffered from some damp-staining, but remains in clear and legible condition. Remains of guard at the left margin.
