WELLESLEY Richard - Autograph Letter Signed - thanks for support

  • £225.00

Richard WELLESLEY, 1st Marquess Wellesley (1760-1842)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Wellesley”) to an unidentified gentleman, thanking him for his support when “unjust and insidious attempts” had been made to reproach his actions.

2 pages 4to, Oxford Street, 29 May n.y [but probably 1806-07].

I have received such information from my Brother of your most kind exertions in my favor, that I cannot resist the desire of expressing my grateful thanks to you. Although I have been apprized of the unjust & insidious attempts which have been made to cast reproach, by indirect means, upon my public services, I have felt difficulty in troubling those, whose esteem I hope always to preserve, on an occasion, which involved many questions of great delicacy. The pains which you have employed to obtain justice for me, are not only entitled to my warmest gratitude, but highly acceptable to me, as affording the most unquestionable proof of your good opinion. My long & intimate acquaintance with your public sentiments renders your testimony in my favour of the greatest value; & I trust that you will accept this expression of my thanks with the same kindness, which you have always shown me. . .”

The letter almost certainly dates from a particularly difficult period in Wellesley’s life, after his return from India. His period as Governor-General of India saw a vast expansion of British influence and power in India, a policy which included an array of alliances with local rulers. However, the situation in the border state of Oudh was particularly unsatisfactory. Wellesley eventually despatched his brother, Henry, to negotiate with the Nawab and restore order to the province, avoiding a possible invasion from hostile forces and securing the border territory.

The resulting arrangement prompted an attempt by a former trader in the province, and now a particularly quarrelsome MP, James Paull, to have him impeached. The charges were brought before Parliament in 1808, and Wellesley’s conduct was resoundingly vindicated by a majority of 182 to 31.

There is some light foxing at the top of the letter, but it remains in sound and clear condition.
