  • £310.00

Henry ADDINGTON, Lord Sidmouth (1757-1844)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Henry Addington”) to David Scott, M.P., agreeing to the nomination of Mr. Farquhar.
1 page 4to with integral address leaf, Downing Street, 24 November 1801.
I am extremely obliged to you for your Letter, & feel myself bound to declare that, under all the Circumstances you have stated, I am perfectly satisfied with the nomination of Mr. Farquhar to succeed Mr. Allardyce.
With my best wishes for the speedy Restoration of your Health, I am . . .”
Henry Addington became Prime Minister in March of 1801, following the resignation of William Pitt the Younger. Addington’s most notable achievement as Prime Minister was quite possibly the short-lived, but very welcome, Peace of Amiens.
The discussion in this letter is entirely political. David Scott, M.P. for the Forfar burghs and a director of the East India Company, had evidently expressed his support for James Farquhar to be selected to succeed Alexander Allardyce as M.P. for Aberdeen burghs. Farquhar duly won the seat at a by-election in 1802.
The letter is slightly stained, though clearly legible, and has a slight tear and remains of mounting to the address leaf.
