Jacob Pleydel-Bouverie, 2nd Earl of RADNOR (1750-1828)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Radnor”) as Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire to Lord Amherst, regarding the offer of guns for the local militia during the French Revolutionary Wars.

2 pages 4to with integral blank leaf, East Down Camp, 7 August 1794.

It was the Intention of the Berkshire Committee, had it been agreeable to his Majesty, to have accepted the County offer of the two Field Pieces for the use of the Militia, to have requested his Majesty’s Permission to have placed them at the Conclusion of the War at Windsor Castle, both as being a Place of Security, and as offering a lasting Memento of the Activity & Zeal of that County, in which his Majesty so much resides.

Tho’ your Lordship has signified to me only his Majesty’s Rejection of the Offer at present, it may perhaps be improper for me under any explanation to renew it, but I take the Liberty of requesting your Lordship with the Committee of the County, & myself the Honor of making known to his Majesty, what our intention was, if the favourable Reception of the Proposal of the County had authorized us to have made it in Form.”

Minor tears at the original folds.
