BARROW Sir John - ALS 1821 regarding an address

  • £195.00

Sir John BARROW (1764-1848)

Autograph Letter Signed ("John Barrow") to T. Murdoch, asking his permission to reproduce part of his address to a committee.

2 pages 8vo, Astney[?], 22 October 1821.

"I have copied out that part of your eloquent address which may have been made to any body or person as well as the committee & sent it to Gifford to see whether he could not introduce it as a note. If therefore you have any objection to its appearing in print (which I hope not) you must let me know. I shall construe silence into consent. I have taken the round terms in preference to the detailed statement; as they only further a didactic narrative. . ."

In a postscript, he adds: "I lament to say that the situation of poor Dr. Batty is most critical & was once judged hopeless - this day would decide his fate."

At the time of writing, Barrow had been serving as Secretary to the Admiralty for nearly two decades. During his time there, he did much to further Arctic exploration.

The blank leaf of the letter has been cut away, leaving only a narrow strip, but the letter is otherwise in very good condition.
