DEVONSHIRE William Cavendish, 6th Duke - Autograph Letter Signed arranging a visit to Lismore
William George Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of DEVONSHIRE (1790-1858)Autograph Letter Signed (“Devonshire”) to “My dr Sir”, informing his correspondent that Lord Mulgrave would be at Lismore and “I recommend him to your kind attention.”
1 page 8vo with integral blank leaf, Brighton, 14 July 1835.
“Lord Mulgrave is going to make a tour in the South, and will let you know when he will be at Lismore. He will be accompanied by two Aid[e] de Camp and a secretary, & I wish them to find everything in order for him at the Castle. I have written to him to ask him to apprize you -- & I recommend him to your kind attention.”
Lord Mulgrave, later Marquess of Normanby, was in his first months as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland at the time of writing, and evidently wished to familiarise himself with the country. Although his appointment was not without controversy, he may be considered to have been more successful in this post than in any of his other positions.
The 6th Duke of Devonshire was responsible for major architectural changes to Lismore Castle, transforming it into a then-fashionable Gothic style edifice.
