DUFY Raoul - Typed Letter Signed 1946 discussing the merits of reproductions of paintings
Raoul DUFY (1877-1953)Typed Letter Signed (“Raoul Dufy”) to Claude Lafaye, agreeing to sign his book by Salacrou [Dufy had contributed a pen and ink portrait of Armand Salacrou for the frontispiece of Salacrou’s play Les Fiancés du Havre], and continuing with a discussion of the value of reproductions of paintings.
1 page large 4to in French, Perpignan, 9 April 1946.
Trans: “It is with pleasure that I will write a dedication which you request on Salacrou’s book; just send me the book to my address, 2, rue de l’Ange, Perpignan, Pyrénéees-Orientales and I will return it immediately.
Please be good enough to let me know which reproductions of my works you have.
I know that a student’s budget does not normally allow him to buy original works of art, I hope that you will catch up once you have your degree or even earlier.
This matter of reproductions which you bring up is a very worrying one, for as and when a taste for art develops in life and with the public, the production of works of art is not elastic. Would the number of authentic paintings increase with demand? This is the economic side of the question which I feel incapable of dealing with. Visiting museums, exhibitions, painters’ studios and acquiring a collection of good reproductions of the works one likes can certainly give satisfaction to those who love painting.
Thank you for your letter which has given me much pleasure and while awaiting receipt of your Salacrou book, I send you my best wishes.”
Dufy’s colourful, vibrant paintings are among the most popular reproductions and posters today, and certainly give pleasure to those who find his original works somewhat beyond their means.
