FULLER Roy - Autograph Letter Signed 1973 to an appreciative reader regarding Huddersfield
Roy FULLER (1912-1991)Autograph Letter Signed (“Roy Fuller”) to “Dear Mr. Taylor”, expressing his delight at finding “an appreciative reader”.
1 page large 8vo, 17 Langton Way, 21 June 1973.
“How very kind of you to write! It is always a pleasure to find an appreciative reader - & two in one family is a welcome bonus.
I know Huddersfield a little: my wife had relatives there & my own mother went to live there when she re-married late in life. There’s just a trace of Huddersfield in Image of a Society – the stone of the main square I suppose chiefly – though most of it is drawn from the other side of the Pennines.”
In a postscript, he adds: “What a good hand you write, if I may say so!”
As implied in the letter, Fuller was indeed born and raised in Lancashire. After service in the Royal Navy, he worked as a solicitor for the Woolwich Building Society, but he also held the Professor of Poetry chair at Oxford for five years, and served on the Board of Governors of the BBC.
His poetry, as well as his fiction, have been rather neglected over the past few decades, and deserve a fresh re-appraisal.
