HERBERT Alan Patrick - Autograph Letter Signed 1918 sending some poems for a reading
Alan Patrick HERBERT (1890-1971)
Autograph Letter Signed ("A.P. Herbert") to "Dear Miss Dolan", sending her some poems [not present] "which I think might be suitable for your purpose".
2½ pages 8vo, 12 Hammersmith Terrace, 27 February 1918.
"Certainly you have my permission, though I should be glad if you would acknowledge the authorship, at any rate, at public audiences. I enclose two other poems which I think might be suitable to your purpose: if not, you might return them, but please don't bother, if they are. I should be grateful if you would let me know when you are going to do either of them, though, being now very hard-worked at the Admiralty, I don't get much time for going out . . ."
Herbert served with the Royal Naval division at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, until he was wounded and invlaided home in 1917.
Soon after the war, his novel The Secret Battle, the story of a soldier who suffers a nervous breakdown at Gallipoli and is consequently executed for cowardice, was published.
The top of the second leaf of the letter has been slightly torn, affecting the first line of the postscript.
