MILLIGAN Spike - Two Typed Letters Signed 1977-78 thanks for a letter of sympathy and support

  • £245.00

Spike MILLIGAN (1918-2002)

Two Typed Letters Signed  ("Spike") to Charles Muggleston, the first thanking him for a letter in which Muggleston had obviously expressed sympathy and concern; the second thanking him for a book.

1 page 4to, Orme Court, W2, 11 August 1977 and half page 4to, Orme Court, W2, 25 May 1978.

"Thank you for your letter of the 6th August. I can tell by your letter that you are a very sensitive person and as you know we suffer more, we feel more deeply, and know the highs and lows.

I haven't found any satisfactory answers, I think I'm an understanding person and I accept each day as it comes along; sometimes darkness, sometimes sunshine. It was kind of you to take the trouble to write to me and I could feel the concern in your letter.

I'm sorry I can't meet with you at the moment, I start a seven weeks television series on Monday, which takes me to 2nd October, and then I'm going to Australia. Again, thank you and may you have happiness too."

Spike Milligan struggled for much of his life with mental health problems and depression, and spoke openly about his problems.

The second letter is addressed to "Dear Charles". This is not, however, due to a growing friendship between the two men, but, as he explains, a simple lapse of memory.

"Forgive me, I've forgotten your last name - I know so many Charles, and get so much correspondence, so please do forive [sic] me, and write and tell me your last name, before I go out of my mind wondering who it is.

Anyway, thank you for sending me the book, it was very good of you to think of me."

Both letters close with a very Spike Milligan touch - "Love, light and peace."
