NANSEN Fridtjof - ALS in English concerning illustrations for his book

  • £675.00

Fridtjof NANSEN (1861-1930)

Autograph Letter Signed twice with initials (“F.N.”), instructions about the placement of photographs in an unspecified book [but very likely Nansen’s two-volume work, Farthest North].

1 page oblong 8vo on his writing paper, Godthaab, Lysaker, n.d.

“All these illustrations except 113, A, B, C, should come in Sverdrup part of the book, as the photos were taken by him, they can be put in where it is thought best, the time they are taken is marked on them. As Sverdrups part is pretty short there will probably be too many illustrations, in that case those of them which are marked with a B could be taken in my part of the book, before I leave the Fram.”

In 1893, Nansen and his carefully chosen crew embarked on a journey across the Arctic Ocean on the now-legendary ship, the Fram. The ultimate aim was the North Pole. The journey, which included a 15-month sleigh trek, failed to reach the North Pole, but did succeed in going further north than any previous explorer. Unlike many other Arctic and Antarctic explorers, Nansen and his men returned alive.

Nansen’ account of the three-year journey, Farthest North, appeared in 1897. The story of the journey itself was exciting, but the scientific and geographical observations noted were of lasting value.

Prominent among Nansen’s crew was his Captain and second-in-command, Otto Sverdrup, who had earlier accompanied Nansen on his journey across Greenland. Later, Sverdrup continued to explore in the Canadian Arctic, mapping the region.

Farthest North was published in London, hence Nansen’s use of English in these instructions.
