PIRANDELLO Luigi - TLS 1934 prior to the Volta Conference
Luigi PIRANDELLO (1867-1936)
Typed Letter Signed (“Luigi Pirandello”) to Alberto Gasco at the Italian Radio Broadcasting association, suggesting that a radio interview about the Volta Conference the following week would be premature.Half page 4to in Italian, Milan, 14 May 1934.
Trans: “Your kind letter of the 10th with the invitation to have a radio interview on 22 May next, regarding the Volta Conference on theatre has just reached me in Milan.
But such a conversation would be premature at the moment and therefore I would like to have the chance to consider this opportunity at a time nearer the Volta Conference.”
The Volta Conferences were held in Rome at irregular intervals during the interwar years, alternating between science and the humanities. Pirandello, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934, was appointed President of the 1934 Conference on theatre. Playwrights and theatre professionals were invited from around the world; George Bernard Shaw was unable to attend, but William Butler Yeats did.
In his opening address, he said that “The theatre cannot die” and spoke of its place in a time of “a ferment of passions and vertiginous events that change the face of whole nations . . . where there is a continual need to emphasize some kind of new certainty in the midst of this tempestuous whirlpool of doubts.”
