Ralph RICHARDSON (1902-1983)Autograph Letter Signed (“yr. Ralph R.”) to “My dear John” [John Moody, actor, director, head of drama at the Arts Council and Director of the Bristol Old Vic], explaining that he is tied up with work on Peer Gynt, and looking forward to working on a production of Faustus.
1 page 4to, Harriet Walk, SW1, 20 May 1944.
“Thank you for your letter and the interesting enclosures, which I return.
I am working with Tony at the B.B.C. like a mad man until June 2nd for ‘Peer Gynt’ so that I doubt vy much that I could get to all your production – which I had hoped to be able to do when I first heard of it.
I think that it will be some time before we come to do ‘Faustus’ when we do if we could have the benefit of your experience it might be splendid the opening productions will be done by Tony & Burrell.
Thank you for your good wishes, & most sincerely to you the same.”
Ralph Richardson formed part of the triumvirate who ran the (London) Old Vic from 1944, the other two being Laurence Olivier and director John Burrell. Peer Gynt, in which Richardson played Peer, was part of the opening season, and the production was recorded that same year for BBC radio.
It would appear that the production of Doctor Faustus which he mentions never came to fruition.
