HORROCKS Sir Brian - Typed Letter Signed 1960 to the Deputy Knight Remembrancer

  • £195.00

Lieutenant-General Sir Brian HORROCKS (1895-1985)

Typed Letter Signed (“Brian Horrocks”) to “Dear Henderson” explaining why he cannot attend a dinner.
1 page 4to, Black Rod’s Office, House of Lords, 16 June 1960.
I regard it as a great compliment that you should have invited me to your Dinner. I am afraid, however, that as you will see from the enclosed note I have a previous engagement.
The notice is a little bit short because as you will no doubt appreciate, one gets a little booked up at this time of the year.
The “enclosed note”, also present, is a typed, formal, letter in the third person, sending his regrets that he cannot attend the dinner of the Chapter and the Members of the Honourable Society of Knights of the Round Table to be held at the Mayfair Hotel on Thursday, 23rd June 1960.
The Society of the Knights of the Round Table was founded in 1720 with the aim of perpetuating the ideals of King Arthur and his knights. It members were largely drawn from the literary, artistic and theatrical world, but, on the evidence of this letter, military figures were also welcome. Early members of the Society included David Garrick and Charles Dickens.
One of the most respected commanders during the Second World War, Horrocks was appointed Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in 1949, a post he held until 1963. Undoubtedly the best-known duty of the office is that of summoning the MPs in the House of Commons to hear the Queen’s speech at the state opening of Parliament.
Together with the typed envelope, addressed to The Deputy Knight Remembrancer.
