HOOVER - J. Edgar - Typed Letter Signed 1936 receiving the fingerprints of a British diplomat

  • £395.00

John Edgar HOOVER (1895-1972)

Typed Letter Signed (“J Edgar Hoover”) on Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead, to British diplomat Victor Mallet, acknowledging receipt of his fingerprints taken by a representative of the Bureau.
1 page small 4to with integral blank leaf, Washington, D.C., 26 May 1936.
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your fingerprints and those of Mrs. Mallet, which were taken by a representative of the Bureau upon the occasion of your recent visit here, and to advise you that these impressions have now been placed on file in the Civil Identification Section.
I wish to assure you that it was a pleasure to have you visit the Bureau and I sincerely hope that its facilities, as explained to you, proved of interest.
Sir Victor Mallet was a distinguished diplomat, who had held posts in Tehran, Buenos Aires and Brussels before his posting to Washington in 1936. He was knighted in 1944 and, post-war, served as British Ambassador to Spain and later to Italy.
The rather sinister J. Edgar Hoover was director of the FBI from its inception in 1935 until his death, having already spent eleven years as head of the FBI’s predecessor, the Bureau of Investigation. The establishment of the FBI saw many new practices established by Hoover, one of which was one of the largest files of fingerprints in a law enforcement agency.
