GARIBALDI Giuseppe - LS 1861 advising a lady to meet with Laura Solera Mantegazza
Giuseppe GARIBALDI (1807-1882)
Letter Signed (“G. Garibaldi”) to a lady, inviting her to discuss a “humanitarian endeavour” with Laura Solera Mantegazza from Milan.
1¼ page large 8vo in Italian, Caprera, 14 July 1861.
“The grateful memory of the great benefits that my Italy has received from you in the past year now pushes my heart towards your most noble person in order to ask for her active cooperation in order to improve the moral condition of the people of the southern region of Italy.
You will have read in the public papers my invitation to Italian women for this humanitarian endeavour. Make this invitation yours; and that of women who resemble you - and form an immense phalanx in your free country! - They will provide funds, they will provide work led and supervised by you . . . you adhered to my prayer. I ask you to discuss this matter with Mrs. Laura Solera Mantegazza, from Milan, who chairs the Committee of Italian Ladies.”
Laura Solera Mantegazza was an ardent patriot and supporter of the Risorgimento. She is also famous for her work centering on the education of children, their upbringing, and the education and support of working class women.
Mantegazza’s name has been filled in in a different hand for reasons which are unclear. One possibility is that it this letter was copied several times and the person with whom the recipient was to make contact varied depending on where they lived. Laura Solera Mantegazza was responsible for a network of institutions designed to aid mothers, children and working class women.
The letter has remains of mount at the left margin and the thin paper has a minor tear, not affecting the text.
