HUXLEY Aldous - ALS 1959 regarding an adaptation of The Gioconda Smile
Aldous HUXLEY (1894-1963)
Autograph Letter Signed (“Aldous Huxley”) to “Dear Mr. Parsons[?]” [possibly Ian Parsons, his publisher at Chatto and Windus], agreeing to a Canadian broadcast of an adaptation of his Gioconda Smile.1¼ pages 4to, 3276 Deronda, Los Angeles, 12 August 1959.
“Thank you for your letter. I don’t know the version of the G. Smile in question – but don’t imagine that it can do any harm to have it broadcast in Canada. You can remind the CBC, when you give permission, that there is my play, from which it wd be very easy to make a version – as has been done repeatedly in this country. Cohen’s version may be taken from the play. I hope so – for I know that I wd like my dialogue better than his! However let them go ahead in any event, and (as you say) sign up Mr Cohen separately.”
Huxley’s Gioconda Smile, one of his most successful short stories, was turned into a play by Huxley himself, and had a successful nine-month run in London in 1948, followed by productions in Paris and on Broadway. The story had previously been filmed, and was presented as television plays in several versions over the years. The psychological study combined with a mystery no doubt inspired other writers of detective stories and television series.
The house from which he writes, Deronda Drive, Los Angeles, was in the path of a fire that raged through the Hollywood Hills in 1961, affecting all the houses in its path. The house was completely destroyed, as were all Huxley’s books, papers, manuscripts, letters, and photographs.
