IRELAND John - Autograph Letter Signed 1936 "Sir Henry Wood will get better results"
John IRELAND (1879-1962)Autograph Letter Signed (“John Ireland”) to “My dear Boult” [Adrian Boult, Director of Music at the BBC and conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra], discussing his music to be included in a programme.
1 page 4to, 14a Gunter Grove, SW10, 1 June 1936.
“Thank you for your letter in regard to the Brass Band overture. I suppose it will do us no harm – but it is a very light & simple piece. If the piece is put in the syllabus it can appear as “Overture” arranged by the Composer. I can think of a title later.
I would rather not conduct this piece. Sir Henry Wood will get better results. The timing is about 12 minutes, the orchestration ordinary (no extras & no harp).
I had hoped “A Forgotten Rite” & the Concerto were to be given – I do not want to be represented solely by a piece of light music.”
In a postscript he adds “The Concerto has not been done for 2 years”.
The letter may be in reference to the season of Promenade Concerts, then held at the Queen’s Hall. The programme for the 1936 Proms concerts included Ireland’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major, played by Arthur Rubinstein on 1 September, and his London Overture on 23 September, conducted by Sir Henry Wood.
The letter has been taken out of a ring binder, with the holes and tears clearly visible but not touching the text. Two pencilled annotations by the recipient’s office can be seen at the top of the letter, again not touching the text.
