SABATINI Rafael - Autograph Letter Signed 1929 reluctantly accepting an invitation
Rafael SABATINI (1875-1950)
Autograph Letter Signed ("Rafael Sabatini") to the writer and critic Arthur St. John Adcock, reluctantly accepting an invitation.
1 page small 4to with integral blank leaf, Glen Caladh, Argyll, 5 October 1929.
"Your letter has followed me into these chilly Western Highlands. The invitation at honours and terrifies me. It is the sort of thing I have hitherto managed to avoid. In your case, however, I feel that I must yield. I'll come, therefore, & do my best not to disgrace myself or you."
Rafael Sabatini, half-Italian, half-English, was fluent in several languages, but chose to write his novels in English. By 1929, he was at the height of his fame, having already published his three most popular novels, Scaramouche, Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk.
It would appear that this letter probably refers to a speaking engagement, organized by St. John Adcock, at the time editor of The Bookman.
The letter has been neatly laid down on an album leaf which is all but unnoticeable on the first leaf, apart from a slight mark at the top righthand corner.
