SAYERS Dorothy Leigh - TLS 1939 about her Nativity play
Dorothy Leigh SAYERS (1893-1957)
Typed Letter Signed ("Dorothy L. Sayers") to Mrs. W. Churchill of 80 Blenheim Gardens, Wallington, commenting on her Nativity play, He That Should Come.
1 page oblong 8vo, Witham, Essex, 2 January 1939.
"Thank you so much for your letter; I am very glad indeed that you enjoyed the Nativity play. It was rather an experiment to produce this traditional subject in so realistic a manner, and it is, therefore, particularly helpful to be told that people liked it."
Dorothy L. Sayers' nativity play, He That Should Come, was broadcast on BBC Radio on Christmas Day 1938. It is extremely interesting, in that it presents the story of Mary and Joseph in an entirely realistic, historical setting, presenting characters generally considered more minor - the innkeeper and his wife, a Roman centurion, a Greek merchant - as fully rounded, interesting people. She wrote other religious plays, including The Zeal of Thy House, commissioned by Canterbury Cathedral for performance in the cathedral, which also focused on an apparently mundane group of characters involved in the rebuilding of the cathedral after a fire in the 12th century.
The name and address of the recipient of this letter may add a certain note of interest, though we can assure our readers that Clementine Churchill was not living in Wallington at this time.
There is a small rusty pin mark at the top right of hte letter, not touching the text.
Together with a copy of the text of the play, second impression, in very good condition.
