SMITH Dodie - Autograph Letter Signed on Christmas Card 1977 mentioning her new books
Dodie SMITH (1896-1990)Autograph Letter Signed (“Dodie Smith”) on a Christmas card, the front showing a reproduction of a painting by Helen Bradley, “Bringing in the Ivy” and the printed message on the inside “With all good wishes for Christmas and Every Happiness in the coming year from . . .”
Together with the autograph envelope, addressed to Jocelyn Glanfield in Shropshire, and a printed slip explaining the story behind Helen Bradley’s painting.
16½ x 20½ cms, Finchingfield, 29 December 1977.
“Thank you for your beautiful card. Unfortunately it arrived just too late to remind me to send you one in time for Christmas but this one will at least bring you good wishes for the New Year.
You really are a faithful “fan” and I very much appreciate your appreciation of my work. I hope the books by me that are due to be published in 1978 will please you. They are all coming out in April, published by W.H. Allen. They are the second volume of my autobiography called “Look Back with Mixed Feelings”; a novel of suspense called “The Girl from the Candle-lit Bath”; and a book for children called “The Midnight Kittens”.
My birthdate is in May but I avoid telling the date because I hate getting birthday cards. I feel too old to like being reminded of the passing years. All good wishes with your writing. I was over thirty before I really got going.”
Dodie Smith was a fairly prolific playwright in her thirties. She was over fifty when her first published novel, the enormously successful I Capture the Castle, appeared.
There is a fold mark at the back of the card, not affecting its overall appearance.
